Welcome to Trezor.io/Start — Your Official Onboarding Guide
Congratulations on acquiring a Trezor hardware wallet! The journey to truly owning your digital assets begins now. Trezor.io/Start is your trusted starting point: a secure, guided portal that takes you through setting up your device, installing the right software, and safeguarding your funds. Follow along and you’ll be transaction-ready in minutes.
Why Start at Trezor.io/Start?
Using Trezor.io/Start ensures that you download only the official tools, follow verified setup steps, and avoid phishing or fake setup sites. All firmware and software recommended there are cryptographically verified by Trezor (SatoshiLabs). The portal is designed to help both beginners and experienced users initialize and use their Trezor safely.
What You’ll Need Before You Begin
A Trezor hardware device (Model One, Model T, Safe 3, Safe 5, etc.)
A USB connecting cable (ideally the one that came with your device)
A computer (Windows, macOS, or Linux) with internet access
A modern browser (Chrome, Brave, Edge, or a Chromium-based browser is recommended)
A pen and the recovery seed card included in the package
Make sure your package is unopened and the holographic seal is untampered. If you see signs of tampering, do not proceed — contact Trezor support for guidance.
Step 1: Visit Trezor.io/Start & Download Tools
Open your web browser and head to
The portal will detect your operating system and offer a download for Trezor Suite (recommended) or the option to use Trezor Bridge/Web depending on your needs
Download the version that matches your computer (Windows, macOS, Linux) and install following on-screen prompts
Trezor Suite is the all-in-one application for managing your crypto: sending, receiving, portfolio tracking, firmware updates, and wallet recovery.
Step 2: Connect & Authenticate Your Device
Plug your Trezor device into your computer via USB
Launch Trezor Suite — it should detect your device automatically
You will be asked to verify the authenticity of the device (sometimes called a “security check”)
If your device is empty, the portal will prompt you to install firmware
Confirm on screen and on your device
The firmware is signed by Trezor and verified before installation
⚠️ Always ensure you install firmware only via Trezor Suite (or through authenticated links). Never install firmware from unverified or third-party sources.
Step 3: Create or Recover Your Wallet
Once firmware is confirmed and installed:
Create New Wallet — for brand-new use
Recover Wallet — if you already have a backup (seed phrase)
If creating a wallet:
Choose “Create New Wallet”
You will be given a recovery seed (12, 18, or 24 words, depending on device and settings)
Write the words exactly and in correct order on the provided card
Confirm the words as prompted by your device
Set up a PIN code to protect your device
(Optional but highly recommended) Enable a passphrase — an extra layer of encryption
If recovering a wallet:
Choose “Recover Wallet”
Select the number of words in your seed (12, 18, or 24)
Input the words securely via the device interface
After successful recovery, proceed with setting your PIN and customizing your wallet
Trezor uses the term “wallet backup” in place of “recovery seed” in some documentation, but often the terms are used interchangeably.
Step 4: Activate & Use Coins
After setup:
In Trezor Suite, go to Accounts
Add the cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) you wish to use
Enable or disable coins as needed
From within the app, you can send, receive, exchange, and track balances
Trezor supports hundreds of cryptos, including ERC-20 tokens and popular blockchains.
Optional: Connect to Third-Party Wallets
Trezor devices can also integrate with several third-party wallet interfaces, giving you flexibility:
MetaMask (for DeFi, NFTs) — connect as a hardware wallet
Electrum (for advanced Bitcoin use)
MyEtherWallet (MEW)
Exodus
When using these, always confirm transactions on the Trezor device itself, never rely solely on the app. Always double-check destination addresses.
Reset / Wipe Device
If ever you want to wipe your Trezor clean (e.g. before selling or transferring):
In Trezor Suite, go to Settings → Device → Wipe Device
Confirm the action on the device screen
Be sure you have your recovery seed backed up offline before wiping
After wiping, the device returns to factory state, and you'll need to start at Step 2 again.
Security Best Practices
Always use the official domain:
Never share your seed phrase or passphrase with anyone
Don’t photograph or digitally record your recovery seed
Only install firmware from Trezor Suite
Confirm transaction details on your hardware screen
Use passphrase protection for extra privacy
If your device packaging looks tampered, stop and contact support
Many users report issues like “device not recognized” or “white screen” during setup. Common solutions include: switching USB cable, using another USB port, installing the latest Trezor Bridge or Suite, or trying a different browser.
